FAQ

How should I prepare?

Preparing for your photo shoot is flexible and ultimately up to you, however, here are a few common questions:

How should I dress? Keep the weather in mind when choosing your outfit. Wear something you're both comfortable and confident in. I recommend keeping things simple- while flashy patterns and bright colors are eye-catching, they can distract from your horse, or clash with the setting of the photo. However, still be yourself! Everyone has their own unique style, and this is one of the things that makes horse and rider portraits so special.

What about my horse? Clean, clean, clean! Braiding is optional. Dress them in either a halter or bridle, but make sure your tack is clean as well! If your horse tends to be hot or fidgety, lunging them beforehand, or giving calming supplements, can be useful. If you do choose to lunge, please make sure your horse does not have sweat marks when it is time to take photos.

Anything else? A second set of hands is strongly encouraged. They can help catch your horse's attention, position you or your horse, help with outfit changes, and all touch ups that may be necessary. Show sheen, a rag, hoof polish, and treats are all helpful as well. If you plan on using props (flower crowns, neck wreaths, etc), please let me know beforehand!

What should I expect?

I prefer getting to your farm 30 minutes early to scout out shooting locations and the best lighting. Sessions are ideally around sunrise or sunset- 30 minutes after sunrise, or 1.5 hours before sunset. However, I understand this is not always possible and daytime shots can have just as beautiful lighting!

Session generally last about an hour, however if I feel more time is needed to get the required shots, it will be added at no additional cost.

If equine portraits are on the docket, we'll start with those. Then I'll move you through a series of poses and prompts to get a combination of candid and posed photographs. We'll travel to several locations on the farm to get a variety of shots and stop for outfit changes/breaks as needed.

If you have plans on where you want photos, which poses you want, and where you'd like to wear certain outfits- fantastic!

I may bring my own 'props' to help get your horses attention- umbrellas, flags, something that makes noises (generally rocks in a milk jug). If this is an issue, please let me know beforehand.
