Equine Portraits

Simply put, clean clean clean! Okay, it's not that serious. However, I do recommend preparing your horse as you would to show. Have your horse clean or recently bathed (completely dry, if so). If possible, clipping your horse's muzzle and ears helps create a crisp appearance. Braids are completely optional, and your horse's portraits will look beautiful with or without!

Tack should be simple and clean. If wearing a bridle, simple snaffles are recommended. Please remove reins and clip a leadrope onto one bit ring. If you choose to use a double bridle, please leave the reins on and over your horses neck, but still clip a leadrope onto one snaffle bit ring.
For halters, use either leather or rope. If you’d like “naked” headshots, a thin rope halter or halter made from twine works well.

For black background photos, a covered barn aisle or covered arena is required. A barn aisle is preferred, and I prefer a clean and swept ground (less editing dirt off the floor means you get your photos back faster!). Please have as little backlighting as possible, and a clean, quiet and organized area. Also, a second set of hands is always recommended! If you are choosing a natural background, I recommend pathways, roads, or simple greenery. However, fields and barns can make beautiful back drop as well.

Lastly, if your horse is often fresh or fidgety, a lunge or calming supplement is often helpful. If you do lunge, please make sure your horse is not sweaty and does not have any sweat marks at the time of the shoot.
